Folic acid, also called Vitamin B9 or folate, is a part of Vitamin B Complex family. Folic acid is very important for human organism, it is crucial for proper DNA replication, and it helps to develop and strengthen cells inside our body. This vitamin prevent DNA changes, thus it might reduce the risk of cancer appearance. In general, folic acid supply is very profitable for health, on the opposite of its deficiency, wchich can lead to:

  • birth defects
  • pregnacy complications
  • anemia
  • diarrhea
  • shortness of breath
  • generall weakness

The power of Folic Acid

Studies shows, that folic acid supplementation before and during pregnacy is great for fetus. It significantly reduces the risk of neural tube defects, and it may prevent misscarriage. The neural tube of developing baby is equivalent to central nervous system, stetoscopwchich includes brain and spinal cord. NTDs may occur right after conception, but in most cases it happens in early stages of pregnacy, when a woman is not aware of her status. Considering many unplanned pregnacies, folate should be taken as early as possible, even if the baby is not planned in the near future. In addition, this vitamin can be helpful for depression treatment. Some studies find link between depression and too low folate level. Folic acid can work as an antidepressant, because it stimulate certain brain receptors responsible for noradrenaline and serotonin production. What is more, folate reduces homocysteine level in the blood. People with high level of homocysteine are more likely to have heart disease or stroke in the future. That is why folate can be beneficial for the cardiovascular system.

In addition to the above, folic Acid can be effective for treatment of:

  • age related vision loss
  • high blood pressure
  • gum problems
  • kidney disease

Folic Acid Source

Humans do not have the ability to synthesize folate. Folic_acid_crystalsIn order to satisfy organisms daily demands, it is necessary to deliver folate through the diet. Folic acid can be found in many types of food, and it is added to grain and cereal products in 76 countries around the world. Folic acid occurs in: fruits, fruit juices, vegetables, nuts, peas, beans, meat, eggs, grains, and even in some types of beer. Folate-rich products are mainly: beetroot, spinach, yeast, soybeans, asparagus, brussels sprouts, beef liver, orange juice, and avocado.

One have to bear in mind, that folic acid originating from food is vulnerable to UV light and heat.

Folic Acid supplementation

It is very hard to overdose folic acid, because this vitamin is soluble in water. It means, that any excess of folate will be taken out by urinating. However, high level of folic acid can mask a Vitamin B12 deficiency.tabletki9 First and foremost, usual precautions should be taken. The doctor will advise a proper daily dosage wchich should be taken, without exposing to any danger. In almost all cases, intake of folate will not result in any side effects, if taken accordingly to daily allowance.

Extreme overdose can lead to:

  • sleep problems
  • confusion
  • loss of apetite
  • stomach problems
  • nausea

United States National Academy of Science developed recommended dietary allowances, wchich is adequate for 97-98% population living in USA. Those results were reviewed and approved by European Food Safety Authority. Recommended daily dosage can be found in the table below.
